How to trade gold (XAU/USD)

A plain, practical guide for traders in Uganda — lots, leverage, margin, costs and the risk rules that keep beginners in the game.

xau/usd · one bar, one hourTARGETENTRYSTOP
A plan is three prices decided before the entry, not after.

Gold (XAU/USD) is traded as a CFD — you speculate on the price, you don't own the metal or coin. One standard lot is 100 oz.

Lots, leverage and margin

Margin is what your broker locks to open a position: (lots × 100 × price) ÷ leverage. At 1:500 a 0.10 lot needs $85.50. Use the margin calculator.

Size to a fixed risk

Decide the money you'll lose at your stop first, then let the position-size calculator pick the lot. Never size by how much margin you have.

Costs

You pay the spread on entry and an overnight swap if you hold. Factor both into every trade.

FAQ

Common questions

What are the actual steps of placing my first gold trade?

Decide your direction and entry, then size the position before you click buy or sell. Enter the lot size, set a stop loss and a take profit, and check the margin the order will tie up. Confirm the ticket, then leave it alone unless your plan says otherwise.

How do I work out the right lot size for a gold trade?

Work backwards from the money you are willing to lose. Choose your stop distance in pips, convert it to dollars using 100 oz per standard lot, and divide your risk budget by that figure. Our position size calculator does this directly, so you can see the lot size before the trade rather than after a loss.

Where should I put my stop loss on XAU/USD?

Place the stop where your trade idea is proven wrong, not at a round number that feels comfortable. Gold can move several dollars quickly, so a stop that is too close gets taken out by noise. Size the position around that stop distance rather than widening the stop to fit a position you already want.

How does leverage change my first trade?

Leverage reduces the cash needed to open a position, but it does not reduce the risk of the position itself. The cap that applies to the entity serving Uganda is a ceiling, not a setting to aim at. At that cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which shows how small a deposit can control a large exposure.

How do I fund a gold trading account from Uganda?

Mobile Money is the familiar route for Ugandan traders, and it lets you move USh into the account without a bank transfer. Check the deposit currency and any conversion before you send, and keep the amount modest while you are learning. Your trading result is separate from how easily the money went in.
