FAQ

Common questions

What price level should I use as a starting reference for XAU/USD?

A useful reference point is around 4275.0, which is the figure this desk works from when explaining pip and margin maths. Treat it as an illustration, not a forecast or a level to trade from. Your broker's live quote is the price that actually applies to your order.

What actually moves the gold price during a Ugandan trading day?

Gold responds to the US dollar, real interest rate expectations, central bank buying and demand for safe assets when risk rises. Because XAU/USD is quoted in dollars, US data and Federal Reserve expectations often drive the sharpest moves, which reach Kampala mostly during the European and US sessions.

Is gold more volatile than the currency pairs I might trade?

Gold can move sharply and without warning, and its pip is 0.01 on a 100 oz lot, so a modest price change produces a large dollar swing per lot. Volatility varies by session and by news. That is why position sizing matters more on gold than on slower instruments, not less.

Does the gold market ever close, and does that affect my open position?

XAU/USD trades around the clock on weekdays but closes over the weekend, and gaps can appear when it reopens. An open position held through the close carries that gap risk, and overnight financing also applies. Check your broker's session times and swap terms before holding through a weekend.

Why is the gold price quoted in dollars when I think in shillings?

XAU/USD is priced in US dollars globally, so the dollar figure is the market price and the shilling amount is a conversion at the rate you get. That means your USh result moves with both gold and the USh/USD rate, and the two can work against each other.
