Finding XAU/USD in the terminal

Gold trades under the symbol XAU/USD, and you find it through the Market Watch or symbol search in MT4, MT5, cTrader or the FxPro app rather than scrolling a default list. Type the code into the search field, add it to your watchlist, and open the chart from there so the symbol stays visible for the session.

Check the contract specification before you trade it. For gold, 1 standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, which is what makes the position size arithmetic different from a currency pair. A one-dollar move on a standard lot is a hundred dollars of exposure, and that is the number our pip value calculator converts into your account currency so the risk is not abstract.

Confirm you are on the right instrument by reading the price against the reference of about 4275.0 and checking the tick size shown in the specification. If the chart looks nothing like that level, you are on a different symbol or a different contract, and it is better to notice before the order than after.

Sizing the order before you click

Size the position from the risk, not from the margin. Decide what a losing trade may cost you in USh, convert it to dollars, then use our position size calculator with your stop distance in pips to get the lot size. Working backwards from the stop is what keeps a single gold trade from becoming the whole account.

Then check the margin the size requires. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50, and our margin calculator will show you the figure for any lot size so you can see how much free margin stays available. Remember that the leverage cap is a ceiling, not a setting to aim at, and using the full cap leaves very little room for the price to move against you.

Run the profit calculator on the same trade before you place it, so you can see what the target is worth in your account currency. If the reward does not justify the stop you have chosen, the trade is not worth taking, and you have learned that without risking anything.

Setting the exit with the entry

Place the stop loss and take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, not afterwards. On gold, a stop of a few dollars is a large number of pips because one pip is 0.01, so enter the stop as a price level and let the platform compute the distance rather than typing a pip count that may not match the chart.

Set the stop where the trade idea is wrong, not where the loss feels comfortable. If the stop has to be wider than your risk budget allows, the correct response is a smaller lot size, not a tighter stop that the normal noise will hit. Our position size calculator handles that adjustment in seconds.

Finally, decide before entry whether you will hold through the overnight roll, because that is where the swap begins to apply. A trade intended to close the same session and a trade intended to run for days are different decisions with different costs, and making that call at entry keeps the swap from being a surprise on the statement.

Why XAU/USD can appear under more than one symbol name in MT4, MT5 and cTrader

The gold symbol can carry different suffixes or prefixes across FxPro accounts and platforms, so you may see XAUUSD, XAU/USD, GOLD or a broker-specific variant such as XAUUSD.a. The base instrument is the same spot gold quote against the US dollar, but the naming convention is set by the platform and account type, not by the metal itself. Before you size anything, open the Market Watch or symbol list and confirm the exact string your terminal uses, because an order ticket built on the wrong symbol will not execute as intended.

Several gold symbols may also reflect different contract specifications rather than different metals. One line might be the standard XAU/USD contract where 1 lot equals 100 oz, while another could be a mini or micro variant with a smaller contract size, and a third could be a futures-style or CFD-only listing with its own expiry and margin treatment. The symbol description panel in MT4, MT5 or cTrader usually states the contract size and margin currency; read that panel before trading, because the same price chart can hide a tenfold difference in exposure per lot.

The practical rule is to pick one gold symbol, note its exact name and contract size, and use only that line for entries and exits on that account. Switching between similarly named gold symbols mid-strategy can leave you with two positions that look identical on the chart but carry different pip values and margin requirements. If you fund through Mobile Money and trade from Uganda, confirm the symbol on the demo first, then apply the same name on the live account so your USh-based risk calculations match the instrument you actually hold.

What one lot of XAU/USD actually controls: 100 ounces and a 0.01 pip

One standard lot of XAU/USD controls 100 ounces of gold, and the pip is 0.01 in the quoted price. That means a one-pip move on a full lot is worth $1.00, because 100 oz multiplied by 0.01 equals 1.00 in the quote currency, USD. At the reference price of about 4275.0, a full lot represents roughly $427,500 of notional gold exposure, which is why the contract size matters more than the chart pattern when you decide how much to trade from Uganda.

The contract size is the multiplier that turns a price change into money. If you hold 0.10 lots, you control 10 ounces, and each 0.01 move in XAU/USD is worth $0.10 rather than $1.00. The worked margin figure for a 0.10-lot position at the applicable leverage cap is about $85.50, which tells you the margin is a fraction of the notional, not the risk itself. Your actual gain or loss still depends on how far price travels against or in favour of the 10 ounces you hold.

Convert that exposure into USh before you click, because the shilling amount is what you will feel. If the UGX/USD rate your mind is using is, say, a round number you know, multiply the dollar pip value by it to see the local cost of a move. The point is not a fixed shilling figure but the habit: know that 1 lot is 100 oz, that the pip is 0.01, and that your lot size scales the dollar and shilling outcome linearly. That single relationship keeps gold sizing honest.

Placing the stop-loss as part of the entry order, not after the fill

Set the stop-loss in the same order ticket that opens the position, so the risk is defined before the market can move against you. In MT4, MT5 and cTrader, the order entry window has a stop-loss field alongside the volume and price fields; filling it means the platform sends the protective order together with the entry. If you leave it blank and intend to add it after the fill, you are exposed for however long it takes you to react, and on gold a fast move can cover many pips in that gap.

The stop distance should come from the chart and your account, not from a round number. Decide the price where the trade idea is wrong, measure the distance in pips using the 0.01 pip size, then check that the loss at your lot size is an amount in USh you are willing to lose. For a 0.10-lot position, each pip is $0.10, so a stop 200 pips away risks about $20 before costs; a full lot would risk about $200 on the same move. The stop is the control, and the lot size is what makes it affordable.

Attach the stop at entry even when you plan to move it later, because the initial stop is your insurance against the unexpected. Some platforms let you set a trailing stop or a break-even rule after the position is open, but those are refinements, not substitutes for the first protective order. If the entry order is rejected because the stop is too close to the market, widen it to a level the platform accepts rather than removing it, and if you cannot find an acceptable stop, the correct action is to skip the trade.

Reading the swap line on a gold position held past the daily rollover

The swap line shows the amount credited to or debited from your account when a gold position is held overnight, and it is applied at the platform's daily rollover time. For XAU/USD the swap is not a single fixed number; it depends on the broker's financing terms, the direction of your position, and the interest-rate differential embedded in the quote. On the FxPro platforms you will see it as a separate line in the position details, often expressed in points or in the account currency, and it can be positive or negative.

Because the swap is charged or paid on the notional exposure, a larger lot size multiplies it. A 0.10-lot gold position carries one-tenth the swap of a full 100-oz lot, and the line will show the daily amount that will be added to or subtracted from your balance if you keep the trade open through rollover. The exact figure is not something you can read from the chart; it is set by the broker and can change, so check the contract specification or the platform's swap display before you decide to hold a position for days rather than hours.

Plan for the swap as a cost of time, not as a trading signal. If your gold trade is meant to last several days, the accumulated swap can quietly erode a small profit or deepen a loss, and the effect is larger when leverage is used at the cap because the position is bigger relative to your balance. In Uganda, where you may be funding via Mobile Money and measuring results in USh, convert the expected swap over your intended holding period into shillings and add it to your risk budget before you enter.

What the leverage cap means for a gold position and why it is not a target

The maximum leverage available to you is a cap set by the entity that serves Uganda, not a setting you should aim to use on every trade. It determines the minimum margin the platform must hold against your position, and the worked example is a 0.10-lot gold position requiring about $85.50 in margin at that cap. That figure is the deposit locked to keep the trade open, not the maximum you can lose; your loss is still driven by the price move and your lot size, and it can exceed the margin if the market gaps.

Trading at the cap leaves very little room for the normal swing of XAU/USD, because the margin requirement is small relative to the notional 100-oz contract. A trader who uses the full cap on a 0.10-lot position is effectively running a large exposure on a small balance, and a modest adverse move can trigger a margin call or a stop-out. The honest approach is to treat the cap as a boundary you stay well inside, sizing from the stop distance and the USh amount you can afford to lose rather than from the maximum the platform permits.

Check the margin figure on the order ticket before you confirm, because it shows the actual amount that will be reserved from your balance at the current price. If that reserved amount is a large share of your account, reduce the lot size until the margin and the stop-loss risk are both comfortable. The regulator caveat applies here: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA; confirm any broker on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list. That check is part of using leverage responsibly, not a substitute for it.

How to check the gold contract specification before you trade on any FxPro platform

Open the contract specification for the exact gold symbol you intend to trade and read four fields: contract size, margin currency, swap type and trading hours. In MT4 and MT5 this is usually available by right-clicking the symbol in Market Watch; in cTrader it sits in the symbol information panel. The contract size confirms whether 1 lot is 100 oz, the margin currency tells you whether margin is calculated in USD or another base, and the swap type tells you whether the overnight line is charged in points or account currency.

The specification is where the numbers you were given become actionable rather than abstract. You can confirm that the pip is 0.01, that 1 lot is 100 oz, and that the reference price of about 4275.0 implies a notional of roughly $427,500 per full lot. You can also see the margin requirement that produces the worked figure of about $85.50 for 0.10 lots at the applicable cap. If any field differs from what you expect, stop and resolve it before sending an order, because the platform will apply the specification, not your assumption.

Re-check the specification whenever you change account type or platform, because the symbol name and contract details can differ between them even under the same broker. Keep a short note of the exact symbol string, the contract size and the margin currency for the account you actually trade, and use that note when you calculate position size in USh. Funding through Mobile Money does not change the contract specification, but it does mean your account balance may be credited in a way that requires a currency conversion, so confirm the margin currency before you rely on the $85.50 figure.

FAQ

Common questions

Where do I find XAU/USD in the MT4 or MT5 terminal?

Open the Market Watch panel and type XAU or gold into the symbol search, then drag the XAU/USD symbol onto a chart. On cTrader use the symbol list and search the same code. Confirm the contract details show 1 lot = 100 oz and a pip of 0.01 before you place any order, because the code must be the gold pair, not a gold miner share.

How do I size my first gold order without blowing the account?

Size from the risk, not the margin: decide the USh or dollar amount you accept losing, divide it by the distance in pips to your stop, and let our position size calculator give the lot figure. Remember 1 lot is 100 oz and a pip is 0.01. A 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin at the applicable cap, but margin is not your risk.

What does one pip on gold actually pay me?

One pip on XAU/USD is 0.01 of a dollar per ounce, so on 1 standard lot of 100 oz a one-pip move is $1, and on 0.10 lots it is $0.10 before conversion to USh. That is why gold moves look large in dollars: a few dollars of price is many pips. Run our pip value calculator on your exact lot size.

Should I place my first gold order at market or with a pending order?

Use a pending order if you want a specific entry price and cannot watch the screen, and a market order only when the current price is where your plan says to enter. Gold at a reference near 4275.0 can gap around news, so a stop-loss and a take-profit on the ticket matter more than the order type you choose.

How do I set a stop-loss and lot size that match on the gold ticket?

Set the stop-loss first in price terms, convert that distance into pips, then choose the lot size whose pip value keeps the loss inside your limit. On gold, 1 lot is 100 oz and a pip is 0.01, so the arithmetic is straightforward and our position size and margin calculators do it for you. Never widen the stop to avoid a loss.
